Facebook is sending emails to select users regarding its $20 million payout from a recent class-action lawsuit. The social network owes certain users up to $10 for its advertising of "sponsored stories." But there is a small catch before you receive a check.
The settlement came from Facebook's unlawful use of "the names, profile pictures, photographs, likenesses, and identities of Facebook users in the United States to advertise or sell products and services through Sponsored Stories without obtaining those users’ consent.” Even though Zuck & Co. claimed innocence, the social network ultimately decided to settle to avoid a lawsuit.
There is, however, some fine print that protects Facebook from giving cash to it's 150 million U.S. users.
"If the number of claims made renders it economically infeasible to pay money to persons who make a timely and valid claim, payment will be made to the not-for-profit organizations on the Settlement website at fraleyfacebooksettlement.com"
