This month, people are figuring out different ways to show their appreciation for African American history. Even schools in Chicago are taking the time to celebrate Black History Month. At Young Women's Leadership Charter School, their staff decided to do a special activity. This activity allowed their students to experience how segregation really was. The teachers separated the girls into two groups. Girls who were red ribbons were treated as the poorly and those who wore pink had special privileges. Staircases, bathrooms, and water fountains were items that were used to express segregation. The students learned what it was like for those who paved the way for them. Below is a clip. Check it out.
What do you think about a school going to this level to show why Black History Month is important? Do you believe more U.S public schools should participate in something like this? Leave comments below.
